What alt text actually does

Alt text is read by screen readers for accessibility and parsed by Pinterest to understand the image. Pinterest now reads images with AI, so honest, specific descriptions align with how the platform already works.

Describe the image, not the pitch

Good alt text says what is visible: subject, setting, colors, action. It is not a second description and not a keyword list. If a blind reader would picture the image, the alt text works.

Where keywords fit

If the keyword describes what is genuinely in the image, include it once, naturally. If it does not, leave it out; mismatched alt text hurts trust and accessibility.

Length and style

One or two sentences is enough for most pins. This generator shows character counts so you can keep drafts tight.

Part of a complete pin

Alt text is one field of a finished pin, alongside a keyword-led title, a useful description, and the right board. The Pin Generator creates all of them together from one keyword.

Alt text is not your description

The two fields do different jobs. Your description is marketing: it carries your keywords, your angle and your call to action for the reader. Alt text is a description of the image itself, written for accessibility tools and for Pinterest image understanding. Never paste one into the other — a description stuffed into the alt field helps neither, and alt text written like an ad fails the people it exists for.

FAQ

What is alt text on Pinterest?

Alt text describes an image for accessibility tools and helps Pinterest understand the image content. You add it when creating a pin (often under advanced settings or via your site metadata for Rich Pins).

How long should alt text be?

Keep it concise and specific: one or two sentences that describe what is actually visible, with the main keyword used naturally, never stuffed.

Should alt text be different from the pin description?

Yes. Alt text describes the image itself; the description can add context, benefits, and a call to action. Avoid pasting the same text into both.

Does alt text help Pinterest SEO?

It supports image understanding and accessibility. It is one signal among many; titles, descriptions, and the image itself still do most of the work.

Is the alt text generator free?

Yes. Drafts are generated in your browser from the details you enter; edit them so they match your real image before publishing.

Can I use the same alt text on similar pins?

Write it per image. Similar pins still differ in subject, angle or setting, and repeated identical alt text describes none of them well. Change at least the details that actually differ.

What should I describe first in alt text?

The main subject and what it is doing, then the setting and the details a viewer would notice next — the same order eyes take in the image. Put anything the image is meant to prove or show near the front.
